Examines early (1811-1819) paintings and drawings of New Testament themes by Cornelius. Traces the transformation of his initially subjective and emotional romanticism into a serene idealism. Discusses his work in relation to the theories of Friedrich Schlegel and Goethe and the production of other Nazarene artists in Italy, especially Overbeck. Publishes a letter from Cornelius to Friedrich Heinrich Schlosser dated Aug 16, 1812.
