Uses evidence from letters written by the engraver and painter to show that several of the prints he dedicated to members of the Medici family were part of an attempt to interest them in commissioning work from him. Also argues that he was actively pursuing Medici patronage at a time in his career when his fortunes as a painter had largely collapsed following the death of his principal patron, Pope Clement VIII.
