Fashion photography is the theme of this issue, which reproduces a diverse range of photographs by today's leading fashion photographers from around the world, as well as important examples of earlier 20th c. fashion photography. Contains a preface by Anna Wintour and the following articles: William Ewing on the development of fashion photography, emphasizing the important influences of portrait photography and the carte de visite; Richard Martin on the achievement of fashion photographer Erwin Blumenfeld; Anne Hollander on art and fashion, antiquity to the present, especially the depiction of clothes in art; Glenn O'Brien on fashion photography, focusing on its prurient intentions and its transcendent power; Valerie Steele on sexuality and eroticism in fashion photography since the 1960s. Andrew Wilkes contributes an interview with fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, focusing on his views on fashion photography, his own and the work of others. Also contains two brief texts: Kenneth Miller on the relationship between fashion photography and music videos; Fred Ritchin on the aims of fashion photography and photojournalism. Concludes with brief biographies of the 49 photographers whose work is reproduced in this issue.
