Abstract
(en)
Publishes seven papers presented at a two-part symposium presented by the Association of Art Museum Directors held in Chicago (7-8 June 1990) and Honolulu (31 Jan-1 Feb 1991): ""Who's on first?": issues of cultural equity in today's museums," by Marcia Tucker; "Chicano art: text and context," by Tomás Ybarra-Frausto; "Change in the American art museum: the (an) art historian's voice," by Irene J. Winter; "When cultures come into contention," by Carol Becker; "The transforming of the American mind," by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.; "The real multiculturalism: a struggle for authority and power," by Amalia Mesa-Bains; "Ancestor worship, sacred pizzerias, and the other: a few conceits of Anglo-American modernism," by John Kuo Wei Tchen; "Museums in the borderlands," by James Clifford. These essays probe the relationship between museums and communities, and address the ways in which American museums can be more responsive to an increasingly multicultural public.
