Monograph on the Portuguese humanist and patron to whom Castiglione's Libro del cortegiano was dedicated. Examines his activity in the cultural ambiance of Rome (1515-25), noting his acquaintance with artists and architects; surveys his efforts to recreate the Roman ambiance in Portugal, 1525-40, through building projects at S. João da Foz and Viseu (where he employed Francesco da Cremona) and his connection with the building of the aqueduct at Évora; also gives an account of his final period in Rome, 1540-56.
