Identifies two fictions within the "reality contract" formed by photography, on which most photographic theory, art photography, and photographic art are based: the slice of life, and the perfect moment; notes that the slice of life has come to be associated with objectivity, and the perfect moment with subjectivity; and discusses recent American photography in this light.
