Traces the sources for Sully's portrait of his son, The Torn Hat, 1820 (Boston, Museum of Fine Arts) to British portraiture of the early 19th c., which Sully would have known from his stay in England in 1809-1810. Calls particular attention to the device of the straw hat shading the sitter's eyes.
