Discusses the impact of multiculturalism on American society, as apparent in language. Argues that if multiculturalism rejects the ideal of democratic government as a unifying purpose held in common among people of different interests and conditions, the alternative seems to be a divided society, with the common projects of social justice and the preservation of freedom cast into disarray.
