Abstract (en)
Contrasts Wollheim's approach (based on Wittgenstein and Freud) and his argument that a concept of human nature is central to the understanding of art, with Derrida's method (based on Lacan, Freud, and Heidegger) and his view that the subject is abolished as the self is divided from it by language, so that the disappearance of the subject is the condition of every utterance, and truth is a construct within a discourse; concludes that Wollheim offers insight into human experience and the art and culture that give it meaning, while Derrida offers insight only into his own critical gesture.
