Examines illustrations from the four most widely circulated English popular magazines: The Penny Magazine, London Journal, Reynolds's Miscellany, and Cassell's Illustrated Family Paper; focuses on the first of these; and looks at evidence of the social mores promoted by the producers of culture in a market whose largest sectors were workers and women.
