Abstract (en)
Contains three essays on American art ca.1680-1965. In the first, Kammen demonstrates how American artists and artisans modified European emblems of time in response to their New World setting. In the second, he explores how 19th c. landscape artists used space to represent the movement of American culture through time. In the third, he looks at two distinctively American motifs of collective memory and tradition--old houses and elm trees--ca.1770-1965.
