Abstract (en)
Examines American scholarly writings on Gothic architecture in the late 19th and early 20th cs. Notes dependence upon ideas developed in England and France: Norton adapted Ruskin's views on the morality of art, Moore developed the functionalist theories of Viollet-le-Duc, and Henry Adams drew upon both Ruskin and Viollet-le-Duc.
