Examines the stage of van Orley's development as a tapestry designer in which he conceived of tapestries as woven paintings, exemplified by three works in the National Gallery, Washington. Studies the Lamentation, related to the Haneton triptych, ca.1520-25, in the Musées royaux des beaux-arts, Brussels; argues that the border with putti was based on Vincidor's cartoons for the Playing Putti series after Raphael, establishing a terminus post quem of 1521 for the tapestry. Also discusses the Last Supper and Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane from the duke of Alba's Passion series, here dated 1520-28 on the basis of its sources in works of Dürer and Raphael.
