Examines the iconography of the sculptural and painted decorations of the Capitol, Washington, DC, executed 1815-1860, in the context of 19th c. American imperialism. Considers the treatment of this theme in the works of Horatio Greenough, Luigi Persico, Thomas Crawford, Randolph Rogers and Emanuel Leutze, and pays particular attention to attitudes towards Native and African Americans revealed in the art commissioned for the Capitol.
