Abstract (en)
The theme of this issue is 20th c. German photography and its relation to German history of the period. Contains eight articles, some primarily on photography, others focusing on history, and some in which the two subjects are combined: "Reclaiming a legacy: photography in Germany and German history," by Klaus Honnef, asserts that German photography in the 20th c. has paralleled the history of the country itself; "Another German autumn," by Ulf Erdmann Ziegler, reflects on the 1970s, when discontent with West German consumer society sparked a campaign of urban terrorism, and revealed contradictory attitudes toward the question of Germany's moral responsibilities; "A view from the temple: the photographs of Herbert List," by Max Scheler, provides a biographical sketch of List, illustrated with five of his photographs; "East side, west side: Berlin between euphoria and anxiety," by Dieter Hildebrandt, sheds light on the history of the city, and the uncertainties for the future which have accompanied the collapse of the Berlin Wall (Nov 1989) and the reunification of the city and the country; "Another country," by Christoph Tannert, looks back on the 40 year history of East Germany and East German photography; "Memory's quest," by Martin Walser, is an excerpt from a novel-in-progress which describes one man's attempt to reconstruct the history of his family that had been encapsulated in the photo albums and home movies destroyed in the firebombing of Dresden in World War II; "The mask of opticality," by Enno Kaufhold, reflects on the Apollonian spirit in German photography today, in the optically precise portraits, landscapes, and architectural views of such photographers as Bernd and Hilla Becher, Axel Hütte, Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff, Günther Förg, and Bernhard Prinz; "The metaphysicians of Dionysus: comments on new German photoworks," by Wilfried Wiegand, explores a new direction in German photography marked by formal innovation and psychological drama, illustrated in the work of such photographers as Bernhard and Anna Blume, Dieter Appelt, and Astrid Klein. A text by Thomas Weski provides a brief history of German photography since the Nazi rise to power in 1933.
