Abstract (en)

Analysis of Appel's sculptures, 1987-1988, emphasizing their reflection of the artist's own aging and sense of death. Highlights three groups of works: portraits of aging, mature faces; eight works of the Titan Series; two Lying Nude pieces (anonymous, young, female bodies). Also discusses Appel's King of the Titans, 1988 (art market), identifying the central figure as Appel himself, the figure of Saturn, and a representation of death.
