Using Mircea Eliade's notion of hierophany (i.e., the manifestation of the sacred in the profane) discusses archaic and pre-Christian symbolism in Rumanian folk art, medieval art (i.e., 16th-18th c. painting), and modern art, particularly the sculpture of Brâncuşi.
