Abstract
(en)
Traces the political symbolism and the history of three columns planned by Cosimo I for Florence: the column of Piazza S. Trinita, comprising a column from the Baths of Caracalla (Rome) and a statue of Justice, installed by Francesco del Tadda in 1565 and altered in 1581; the marble column in Piazza S. Felice erected 1577 and removed in 1838 (now in the Boboli gardens), which never received the intended statue of Religion; and the marble column planned for Piazza S. Marco, which was to have been crowned by a statue of Peace, but was never erected.
