Abstract (en)
Studies the iconography and forms of the tomb of S. Dominic by Nicola Pisano (Bologna, S. Domenico) in light of contemporary Dominican sermons; comments on affinities with ancient sarcophagi and some Medieval sepulchral monuments; concludes on the basis of the affinity of its original form with Tuscan pulpits that the tomb was conceived as an allusion to the mission of the Order of Preachers; and contrasts the elevated, free-standing Arca with the tomb of S. Francis under the crypt of S. Francesco in Assisi, noting the rivalry between the two orders.
