Abstract
(en)
Discusses the main types of 15th c. Italian portraits of rulers--the half-length profile portrait on panel, genealogical images, cycles of Famous Men, group portraits, and scenes containing portraits--and their functions: to celebrate the subject, illustrating his virtues, deeds, and daily life; to substitute for him, to exalt his family, and to create or strengthen political alliances. Examples discussed include portraits of the d'Este family by Pisanello.
