Surveys 19th and 20th c. art historical literature on studioli; traces the development of the Italian Renaissance studiolo; comments on the collecting and display of objects of science and art; notes the relationship between the studiolo and the museum; and links this to the choice of the Muses as the subject of the iconography of Leonello d'Este's studiolo at Belfiore (Ferrara).
