Identifies two pervasive strategies of the Gonzaga family for projecting their prestige in the 15th c.: prowess in arms and knowledge of letters; and traces reflections of these concerns in their patronage of the visual arts, especially medals and the fresco decorations by Pisanello and Mantegna in the Palazzo ducale.
