Abstract
(en)
Examines the interpretation of the episode of Moses and the burning bush (Exodus, 3) in the visual arts. Notes that whereas in Byzantine iconography the burning bush is represented with the Madonna and Child, to symbolize the virgin birth, in Western art of the Middle Ages, it is represented with the figure of Christ, and beginning in the 12th c., it comes to be depicted with an anthropomorphic image of God himself. Examples discussed range from 13th c. mosaics in S. Marco, Venice, to frescoes by Botticelli and Raphael in the Vatican (Rome). Finally, analyzes Medieval art as biblical exegesis.
