Abstract
(en)
Analyzes the concept of illustration in works of Philippe de Champaigne in light of his close ties to Port Royal. Stresses the importance for the Jansenists of the question whether to translate the Bible literally, even at the expense of leaving the meaning opaque, or to take liberties in the interests of a legibility that risks limiting or even falsifying the meaning of the original. Finds that the artist opts for the use of chiaroscuro and a compositional obscurity capable of communicating the spiritual sense of the biblical subject, beyond the narrative content.
