Comments on two exhibitions of contemporary art on Tyneside (summer 1990): A new necessity, The First Tyne International Exhibition of Contemporary Art, organized by Declan McGonagle, which featured works for specific `social' sites in and around Gateshead and Newcastle by 44 invited artists; and Edge '90, a biennial program of installation and performance art which opened in Newcastle.
