Discusses three copies of John Lydgate's Siege of Thebes attributed to the scribe Stephen Doddesham in the 1430s (including Beinecke MS 661). Suggests that, early in his career, Doddesham was engaged in some form of commercial manuscript production--probably in London. Each manuscript was likely made in response to a specific commission. Various artists were responsible for the decoration.
