Discusses Apollinaire's descriptive art criticism of early Picasso works, in which traditional ekphrasis was used to analyze paintings from the Blue and Rose periods. Shows how ekphrasis did not offer a suitable approach to writing about Picasso's Cubist pictures, in particular his collages, and how Apollinaire developed concrete poetry-criticism to solve this problem.
