Abstract (en)
In light of new evidence suggesting that the chapel was dedicated to S. Elizabeth of Hungary, the first royal Franciscan saint, identifies the holy monarchs in the two frescoes by Simone Martini, Five Saints and Madonna and Child with Two Royal Saints, in the transept of the lower church of S. Francesco as members of the Arpad dynasty linked to S. Elizabeth; argues that the patron was her great-niece Mary of Hungary, mother of S. Louis of Toulouse; and dates the frescoes between 1317 (date of Louis's canonization) and 1319.
