Abstract (en)
Contains seven texts related to the stated theme of the volume: "Ad Reinhardt and the younger artists of the 1960s," by Lynn Zelevansky, examines Reinhardt's role in the development of American art of the 1960s, seeing his work as a crucial bridge between Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism; "Jasper Johns: ale cans and art," by Wendy Weitman, discusses Johns's bronze sculpture of two Ballantine ale cans, Painted Bronze, 1960 (collection of the artist) and examines his reworking of that image in a series of prints and working proofs titled Ale Cans, 1964-1990, as well as a few drawings and paintings; "The precursor," by John Elderfield, discusses the exhibition of paintings and watercolors by Joseph Mallord William Turner, held at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1966), exploring the reasons for the extraordinary popularity of the exhibition, and Turner's role as a precursor of contemporary abstract painting, succeeding Monet in that role; "Jim Dine and performance, " by Joseph Ruzicka, traces Dine's work in the performing arts in the 1960s from the Happenings through his stage adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The picture of Dorian Gray (1967-1968), and discusses Dine's set and costume designs for that production (New York, Museum of Modern Art); "Overcoming the limits of matter: on revising minimalism," by Rosalind Krauss, examines the history and interpretation of Minimalism, focusing on the contrast between California light-and-space art (Robert Irwin, James Turrell, et al.) and the emphasis on physicality and surface in the 1960s minimalist paintings of Frank Stella and sculptures of Robert Morris; "Complexity and contradiction twenty-five years later: an interview with Robert Venturi," by Stuart Wrede, focuses on the reasons why Venturi wrote the influential book, Complexity and contradiction in architecture (1966), and the thinking that informed it; "Elia Kazan's Wild River, " by Charles Silver, reassesses the 1960 film.
