Draws attention to two early collections of national information on collections in Scotland, precursors of national databases of museum information: the catalogue of the antiquities, works of art, and historical Scottish material exhibited in the "museum" of the Royal Archaeological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, at the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh, 23-26 July 1856; and the survey of holdings of local museums, carried out by Joseph Anderson and George F. Black in the late 1880s.
