Brief history of the Islamic practice of offering robes to local and visiting dignitaries as honorific gifts, beginning in the 8th c. and continuing through the 19th; honorific garments were presented from the 17th c. on to European envoys to Turkey and Iran. Discusses the textiles used in the robes, including the symbolism of the color and weaving patterns employed.
