Abstract (en)
Survey of ramparts in Jylland (e.g., Ribe, Kalø, Kolding and Skanderborg) built by peasants as a punishment for taking part in a 1313 revolt against the Danish King Erik Menved. Offers reconstruction of Borgvold (Viborg) using archaeological evidence (i.e., C.F.S. Bruun in 1889) and drawing parallels with other contemporaneous Danish fortifications. Suggests that Borgvold was surrounded by a moat, had either a crenelated stone ring wall with towers or a stockade, and was protected from the southwest by a dam and water mill. Borgvold dates from 1314 according to a dendrochronological examination of piles along its entranceway.
