Offers a new account of Manet's painting, based on an examination of the artistic persona he constructed through his art. Focuses on his depictions of Victorine Meurent, including Olympia and Luncheon on the Grass (both Paris, Musée d'Orsay), and examines the critical response to these and other works, in particular in the writings of the Goncourt brothers and Zola.
