Abstract (en)
Examines artists' self-portraits and signatures incorporated into 12th-13th c. manuscript illuminations, goldsmithing, sculpture, and architectural decoration. Notes that they tend either to be mediated by the patron's influence or to reflect the craftsman's right to mark a particular work and so claim a place among rival craftsmen. Observes in many of them, however, a sense of irony akin to modern sensibility in spite of their anonymity.
