Offers a brief history of the building of the church under the patronage of the empress Galla Placidia, and presents the archaeological evidence for a reconstruction of the original architectural form of the chambers. Suggests the possibility that the chambers used a hypocaust system to prevent humidity. Establishes the function of the chambers as libraries and possibly scriptoria and posits them as belonging to a revival of the formal tradition of Roman Imperial libraries.
