The cleaning of the interior of the cathedral from 1983 to 1986 allowed the analysis of the various limestones used in the construction of the building. Several local limestones were used in the original structure, indicating that the builders of Paris understood the constructional possibilities of different stone types. Limestone used in restorations of the building do not come from the Paris region, but efforts were made to match the types originally employed.
