Examines the ways in which five Canadian painters--Bertram Brooker, Emily Carr, Lawren Harris, Jock Macdonald, Fred Varley--used mystical form rather than aesthetically initiated form in their painting. Looks at these artists' beliefs in Christianity, transcendentalism, theosophy, and theories of the fourth dimension, and explores the impact of these spiritual sources on their art. Notes how their treatment of nature, space, and movement are informed by their spiritual beliefs.
