Abstract (en)
Detailed study of Orcagna's tabernacle in the church of Orsanmichele, Florence, built ca.1352-1360s. Seeks to determine the original appearance of the tabernacle on the basis of contemporary descriptions and illustrations, and discusses the devotional practices it was designed to serve. Describes the role of the tabernacle in religious spectacles of the 14th c., and relates these practices to the structure of the work. Finally, places the work in the context of comparable structures, and establishes a relationship between the Orcagna tabernacle and an earlier tabernacle that stood in Orsanmichele, which is illustrated in the Libro del Biadaiolo.
