Examines the development of sculptural techniques through the jamb figures at Chartres, focusing on the carving of drapery and locks of hair, and on the relationship of the figures to the columns that support them. Argues that the consistency of structural concepts revealed by this analysis points to the authorship of the Headmaster (Hauptmeister) alone, without the aid of assistants.
