Text of a lecture on the philosophy of art and art perception, especially `The Institutional Theory of Art', which focuses on the role played by the art world (artists, critics, collectors, curators, art historians, philosophers, poets, et al.) in interpreting and legitimizing art. Cites in particular American critical responses to Minimalist art and the work of Hesse and Mangold. Lecture presented on the occasion of Robert Mangold's exhibition at the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht.
