Cites documentary sources for the construction of the towers and other elements of Castel S. Angelo, Rome, by Antonio Sangallo il Vecchio, as recorded in Vasari. Suggests that the work began in 1495, not 1492 (as previously believed), and that the first bastion was built by the Florentine architect Antico di Stefano, and that Sangallo's contribution should be dated closer to 1499. Appendix of documents, 1495.
