Abstract (en)
Discusses architecture, real and painted, reflecting the taste and patronage of Lorenzo de' Medici. Reexamines two preparatory drawings (1481) for Leonardo's Adoration of the Magi (Florence, Galleria degli Uffizi), focusing on the architectural elements, which have recently been linked to Giuliano da Sangallo's design (1480) for the Villa Medicea at Poggio a Caiano. Attributes to the circle of Giuliano a drawing (Florence, Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi, 2170/A, formerly attributed to Giovanni Antonio Dosio) of the facade of the cathedral of S. Maria del Fiore, Florence, and suggests that it is the only surviving design from the 1490-91 competition held under Lorenzo de' Medici. Also discusses two representations by Leonardo of S. Lorenzo, Florence.
