Abstract
(en)
Considers the development of "speaking" initials in Italian book illustration, beginning with their sporadic appearance in late Medieval manuscript illumination. Emphasizes the role of Venetian publisher Gabriele Giolito de' Ferrari in establishing the use of acrophonetic initials for books published from 1539 onwards, and traces their rapid diffusion and subsequent longevity in Venetian and Italian book production. Notes the preeminence of Ovid's Metamorphoses in this development.
