Analysis of Bingham's painting, 1853-54, Stump Speaking (Saint Louis, Boatmen's National Bank Collection), also known under the title The County Canvass. Examines the painting's imagery in relation to Whig politics and the economics of art production in Bingham's day. Notes that the painting suggests Bingham's faith in a market culture which could unite statesman, politician and voter, as well as artist, showman, and viewer.
