Interprets the Medici Palace garden, Florence, before 1464 as a symbolic environment that was involved in the creation of the double image of Cosimo, as both a magnificent prince and a humble citizen of Florence. Describes the layout and contents of the garden during Cosimo's lifetime, and considers the iconography and inscriptions of the Donatello statue of Judith and Holofernes (now Florence, Uffizi) which served as a fountain. Sees the garden as an allegory of the victory of the Florentine republic over tyranny.
