Detailed examination of the (unrealized) project for a monument to Bismarck to be erected in Oldenburg, undertaken in 1907. Outlines the initial stages of the project through World War I and the end of Behrens's involvement. Proposes a hypothetical reconstruction of the monument, and assesses its design in the context of Behrens's early career as an architect, as well as in relation to his work as a painter. Explores the political and cultural significance of the Bismarck project in Germany between the wars and today.
