Study, based on documents and descriptions, of festivals held in São Paulo, 1710-1822; demonstrates that the celebrations depended upon initiatives and decisions of the colonial authorities, whether mainland Portuguese, local (the Capitania or the Câmara Municipal), or ecclesiastical.
