Abstract (en)

Study of the cult of the Virgin and associated celebrations in the diocese of Coimbra in the 18th c. Presents evidence concerning the number and distribution of miraculous images, and discusses the attributes of the Virgin; also examines the cult as reflected in festivities and pilgrimages in the region of Coimbra today, and focuses on celebrations, churches, and images of the Virgin in Figueira da Foz. Concludes that there is no evidence that the cult was concentrated on the coast or that it was particularly related to the seafaring activities of the Portuguese.
