Abstract (en)

On the life of Álvaro de Castro; argues that it was he who conceived the project of transforming his father, João de Castro, into a hero on a European scale, and that he may have inspired the series of 10 Flemish tapestries, History of D. João de Castro, in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, but that he did not commission them. Proposes that they were an important royal commission, ordered by D. Maria, and executed 1558-60 to designs of António Campelo, and that they entered the Hapsburg collections by a logical route. (Includes reproductions of the tapestry series, with discussion of each piece by Maria Antónia Quina Carvalho Fernandes).
