Abstract
(en)
Analyzes the parallel development of history writing and the visual arts in expressing institutional and cultural changes in the Low Countries, 1580-1630. Focuses on the emphasis on causality in these textual and pictorial representations of the evolution of the new Netherlandish state. Compares new forms of written history with an interest in the depiction of chronological sequences; and observes a parallel appeal to classical sources both in texts and in architectural design.
